Balaju Yantra Shala (BYS) was established in 1960 as a joint venture project of the Nepal Industrial Development Corporation and Helvetas, then known as SATA (Swiss Association for Technical Assistance). At a time when Nepal had very limited technical manpower and welding technology was not yet available, BYS was established as the country’s first mechanical workshop with a vision of developing local manufacturing and engineering capabilities. In 1962, BYS built and installed its first Propeller Turbine to drive a 5 kW generator at the Godavari Fish Farm, marking an important milestone in Nepal’s Micro-Hydropower development. Building on this experience, BYS developed turbine technologies suited to Nepal’s local conditions, focusing particularly on practical, locally manufacturable designs. After exploring different turbine technologies, BYS selected the Cross-Flow Turbine because of its simple manufacturing process and suitability for different head and flow conditions. The first Cross-Flow model, T1, was developed as a hand-regulated turbine for agro-processing applications such as rice huskers and oil expellers. Over the years, BYS continued improving its designs and developed various models, including the T1 to T12 series and T3M. The T4 model introduced automatic governor control for village electrification, while the T12 incorporated further improvements in flow control. Beyond turbine manufacturing, BYS has been involved in site surveys, installation, commissioning, and maintenance of Micro-Hydropower Plants, particularly low- and medium-head run-of-the-river systems. Its turbine designs and manufacturing methods have been developed with consideration for Nepal’s terrain, transportation challenges, local resources, and technical requirements. Despite challenges related to manufacturing, transportation, skilled manpower, raw materials, and hydrological data, Balaju Yantra Shala has continued its commitment to Micro-Hydropower development and engineering innovation. Over the years, its turbines have also been supplied to various countries, reflecting its experience and capability in turbine manufacturing and engineering services.
